Ahh yes! More homemade Chinese food for my blog! Did you expect something different? Maybe you did, but I’ll tell you what. The orange chicken was quite something, so let’s talk about the process of cooking it. This was meant to be written over a month ago (embarrassing, I know), but I don’t forget to write about what I want to write. So with that, let’s begin!

Like always, the white rice was cooked in a pot for 15 minutes. Sometimes fried rice is made, but that means cooking the rice a day ahead of time. While that was boiling, my mother made the orange chicken. When it comes to preparing the sauce, she puts the ingredients in a big measuring cup. However, she measures them out with smaller measuring cups (I have done so myself.). The ingredients were cornstarch, rice vinegar, water, sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, white vinegar, and orange zest (yes, ACTUAL ORANGE ZEST). Then, all of them were mixed together in that big measuring cup.

As my mother often does for these kinds of dishes, she does not pour the sauce into a separate pan, as that means more dishes need to be washed later on. So after that, she coated the chicken cubes in egg wash and cornstarch before placing them in a pan. Keep in mind that there’s no need to add more than salt and pepper as seasoning ahead of time, because the sauce is going to bring the necessary flavor.

Though after the chicken was cooked and removed from the pan, it was time to simmer the Orange Chicken sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil to thicken it, and then add the cooked chicken cubes back into the pan. After that, everything was mixed together, and this was the outcome. Look at it, girl!

Crab rangoons, egg rolls, and pork wontons were also cooked. Although, those were made before the orange chicken was even cooked.

And in the end, look at that plate! It was arranged so nicely that you would take it in an instant. The green onions made the plate stand out. The orange chicken literally had an orange flavor, which some people may or may not like, but it was interesting nonetheless.

Despite me not being a real help in the kitchen, I enjoy my mother’s food. She doesn’t like that I don’t help out much, and she’ll even make me help her out in the kitchen at times. However, the fact that I eat her food and enjoy it brings her some pleasure in the end.
